Tombos Community

As we wrap up our fieldwork for 2017, we want to acknowledge how grateful we are to the Tombos community.  Our workers at the sites of Tombos cemetery, Tombos town, and Abu Fatima are essential to our success.  As usual, everyone in Tombos has been kind, friendly, and generous with their hospitality.   It’s been a great 2017 season.

Fun Field Food

As we finish up our last week of fieldwork at Tombos, we feature a bit of fun from our field house cuisine.  Our team can be quite creative in their culinary masterpieces.  Pictured here is the “Caldwell”, named for the creator, PhD Anthropology student, Sarah Caldwell. It consists of a Sudanese biscuit, locally made peanut butter, a sprinkle of salt, and six dark chocolate M&Ms brought by Stuart.  On the right is the “Smith” variation of the “Caldwell”, named for Stuart Tyson Smith who tests the limits of the treat by adding two additional dark chocolate M&Ms!

A Coffin for Horemhet

Normally at Tombos, termites have reduced the wooden mummiform coffins so popular with New Kingdom Egyptians to a sad mass of frass clinging to the bones of its occupant and we are lucky to get a scrap or two of the decoration. This season, one tomb has yielded many well preserved fragments from two coffins (one male, one female based upon the red and yellow color of the face) torn apart by ancient looters, revealing large sections of inscription and decoration including the images of the protective deities invoked in the spells, including the four Sons of Horus also mentioned on the canopic jars that were the subject of a previous post. The fragments also mention the god Anubis, who presided over mummification and guided the dead through the Netherworld. A Hem-Netjer Priest (literally, “Divine Follower/Servant”) named Horemhet is mentioned on the coffin fragments (next to the figure of the deity in the photo), along with a “Mistress of the House” named Beky, presumably his wife. The Hem-Netjer Priest was important in the temple hierarchy, and given the lack of a significant temple at Tombos, it is tempting to think that he may have served in one of the large temples of New Kingdom Pnubs (Kerma Dokki Gel), which lay only about 10 kilometers from Tombos. Mistress of the House was a common title for elite women, reflecting their ideal role in charge of household matters.

Duck Cosmetic Spoon

In the remains of a wooden box for toiletries, Katie Whitmore and Stuart Tyson Smith found a small duck shaped Egyptian alabaster cosmetic “spoon” (really a small dish for mixing). The rendering is very schematic; the handle of the “spoon” represents the tail of the duck, and the head is shown in side view with the beak pointing down in the photo. The box was close to the woman buried with a mirror discussed in an earlier entry, who was likely its owner. Cosmetic “spoons” and other equipment are often decorated with a marshy theme and thus are connected with fertility; so, like the mirror, this piece may have served a dual role as an object of daily life and a symbol of rebirth. A somewhat larger bowl made of the same material was found above it. Egyptian alabaster is actually travertine, and you can see the characteristic banding running through the middle of the “spoon” in the photo. Below the “spoon,” you can see a small lidded container made of ivory, very fragile and successfully lifted by conservator Elizabeth Drolet, and a well-preserved copper alloy applicator for kohl and other cosmetics. A copper alloy razor lay beneath. Women tended to have more elaborate cosmetic sets in the New Kingdom, but both men and women wore kohl around their eyes in life. Kohl served both to beautify and helped to avoid eye infections and parasites.

From the Young to the Old

This season, small pit burials surrounding larger structures have yielded several infant and child burials.  Often a young person is buried alone in a pit.  In one unusual pit, we found child buried along with an elderly man. This man was buried in a wood coffin (only termite eaten frass remained) with several pottery vessels.   Preliminary analysis suggests that he was on the upper end of the age spectrum (60+), very robust with large muscle attachments, tall in comparison to the rest of the sample and had healed fractures, including his left forearm, hand, and several ribs, as well as several fused vertebrae.  The child, approximately 12 years old, was found buried face down underneath the coffin of the elderly man; the position of the body suggests it was likely wrapped in fabric, though none was preserved.  Based on previous finds at Tombos and other sites, it is possible that this child was not intentionally placed face down but that the people preparing the wrappings lost track of which side was up (see Stuart Tyson Smith’s 2003 Wretched Kush book for more info).

Visit to Tombos Elementary School

Stuart and Michele gave a talk at the local Tombos elementary school about archaeology, our team of researchers this year, and a few of our findings. We also presented the school principal with three educational posters to assist them in teaching about archaeology, Nubian history, and our work at Tombos.  We had a great discussion and enjoyed our visit.

Lady with a Mirror

Katie Whitmore found a mirror in situ on a burial in the western chamber of a pyramid complex. A group of three burials survived intact. Each had a pair of carnelian earrings and a scarab, and this one had a copper alloy mirror and ebony khol applicator placed upon her abdomen. Mirrors were commonly included amongst the toiletries that accompanied the Egyptian dead into the Netherworld. Although both men and women wore makeup and had toiletry kits, mirrors are strongly associated with burials of women, as is the case with our example, suggesting a gendered pattern. In addition to their prosaic role, the shiny disk of a mirror symbolized the disk of the sun-god Re, and thus might have had connotations of fertility and rebirth in a funerary context. Although we are not sure if our example was decorated, mirrors often have imagery associated with the fertility goddess Hathor on the handle, reinforcing their association with the feminine and with rebirth.
